Since he came next on point 16 of the Vuelta a 34, briton Tao Geoghegan Hart missed on his first stage win in a Grand Tour for the next day in a row.
The coastal point was won by dane Jakob Fuglsang by 22 minutes from Geoghegan Hart – who came on Sunday – as his overall race lead was long by Primoz Roglic.
On a day that the peloton let the breakaway a significant benefit, Roglic completed in 16th but added 23 seconds to his head over world winner Alejandro Valverde.
Heading the 18km’category’ climb, Valverde was unable to respond when Miguel Angel Lopez and Tadej Pogacar assaulted.
Roglic bridged over to the set and they retreated to complete on precisely exactly the same moment.
Pogacar is less than minute behind Valverde, using Lopez a 17 minutes back.
One of the biggest movers on the day was 23-year-old Briton James Knox, who finished fourth to the afternoon to climb to 11th place.
Five phases stay before Sunday’s 106.6km trip to Madrid, though Tuesday is a rest day.
Stage 17 is a horizontal 219.6 km ride on Wednesday by Aranda de Duero to Guadalajara.
