Scotland vice-captain John Barclay hopes to earn place against Japan by impressing in Russia clash
Scotland vice-captain John Barclay would be expecting to earn a place in Gregor Townsends strategies because of their vital World Cup battle with Japan by impressing against Russia on Wednesday.
The Edinburgh flanker was dropped following a disappointing display against Ireland to the 34-0 thrashing of Samoa but will lead a side against the Bears at Shizuoka.
Scotland head coach Townsend is keeping the majority of his stars back for their final group game against the hosts after producing 14 changes to the side which dispatched Samoa at Kobe.
Barclay is keen to show Townsend he is well worth a full remember for the Japan game as well, however, once the sides move head-to-head in Yokohama in a game which could decide which side advances into the quarter-finals of the tournament.
For the time being, however, his focus is on the match against Russia.
The big game for me personally would be Russia, I dont have any clue what the team is going to probably be for Japan, said Barclay.
I imagine the reality is that the men who are playing with Russia will be about the outskirts for another game. It doesnt take much to work out.
But, equally, for the men that are playing Russia theres huge motivation to become involved for that Japan match.
The fact is there will need to be a major operation and I need to prove I deserve to be involved against Japan.
Ive been frustrated, I have been frustrated since the Ireland match. The game has been frustrating, but its part of being a baseball player.
Its the very first time I have been left from the squad because I returned to the fold. It has been rough, but understand all of my focus would be on Russia.
